MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the TWU doctoral program is to train individuals to serve as tenure track faculty at institutions of higher education, adapted sport specialists for organizations or agencies such as the US Veterans Administration, or serve as physical education or adapted physical education coordinators in public schools.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
When you are part of the APA doctoral program at TWU, you will learn from faculty members who have helped mold the field now known as adapted physical education. TWU has a long history of preparing educators to impact the lives of individuals with disabilities through physical activity and involvement in physical education. Physical education and sport pedagogy are at the core of this doctoral program that extends to special populations.
PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS
Teaching:
Most doctoral students are actively engaged in teaching University courses, conducting adapted sport and/or fitness programs, or overseeing other aspects of teacher preparation.
Scholarship:
As a doctoral candidate, you will present a minimum of two research projects and publish at least one manuscript before graduation. A manuscript based on your dissertation must be submitted for publication before graduation, also.
Service:
Not provided.

This program requires 96 credit hours, including credit hours from graduate-level work and six semester credit hours for dissertation. (See full program requirements in the Graduate Catalog.)
ADMISSIONS
- Apply to the TWU Graduate School. (See the Graduate School for specific Kinesiology program admission requirements.)
- Following review of your Graduate School application, the Kinesiology Graduate Coordinator will send you the APA department application materials.
- Return the completed APA packet back to the graduate coordinator.
- The Kinesiology department will review your materials and determine if you qualify for an interview.
Preferred/Minimum Requirements:
Preferred/Minimum Requirements:
To be considered for this program, you must have a master's degree in Kinesiology or a related field with a major in physical education, adapted physical education, coaching, special education, exercise physiology or similar area of study. Also, at least two years of teaching/professional experience is highly recommended.
**These are preferred requirements but exceptions can be made on an individual basis**
FINANCIAL AIDE AND EMPLOYMENT
Financial aid can include scholarships, loans and grants. When you apply for financial aid through the FAFSA, you are automatically considered for loans and grants so you don't need to apply for them separately. You may also apply for scholarships along with your financial aid or for scholarships only https://www.twu.edu/finaid/.
Graduate students interested in preparing for teaching and research careers in higher education are encouraged to apply for a competitive Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA). The majority of GTAs are awarded to Ph.D. students; however Master’s students are also eligible. Graduate Teaching Assistantships are available primarily in the areas of exercise physiology. adapted physical education, biomechanics, coaching and sport management.
GTA applications are accepted throughout the year; however, students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible to be considered for all vacancies. Please note that students must be admitted to the graduate program before they can be awarded a GTA position. Find more information on the process and access the GTA application.
