MISSION STATEMENT
SES is concerned with the many aspects of human movement and its application to sport management, physical activity and the quality of life. Students in SES focus on one of several areas of human movement, including physiological and biomechanical aspects of exercise, psychological and sociological aspects of physical activity, traditional and outdoor physical education, as well as the marketing and management of sport. Our degree programs prepare students to compete successfully for careers in the allied health industries, public school systems and sport management positions. Interested in physical education? UNC is Colorado's flagship institution for preparation of physical education teachers.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Doctor of Philosophy in Sport and Exercise Science with a Physical Education and Physical Activity Leadership emphasis prepares students for academic positions in higher education. Students are afforded the coursework, research, and practical experiences necessary for conducting and translating sound science with practical significance. Students will have the opportunity to gain valuable teaching experience in pedagogy. They will also have opportunities to participate in ongoing and interdisciplinary research within the School of Sport and Exercise Science (SES) and the well-equipped educational research laboratory.
PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS
Teaching:
PhD students can gain experiences teaching: online courses, activity courses, methods courses, and field-based experience supervision.

PhD students build a comprehensive matrix that outlines their scholarship expectations throughout their program. While scholarship expectations vary from student-to-student - each student will progress from smaller roles within existing research projects to experiences leading independent research (particularly in their dissertation projects).
Service:
Students are encouraged to serve on department and university committees throughout their time at the university. Additionally, students are provided with opportunities to contribute to the SHAPE Colorado journal editorial team, and serve community-based organizations.
