MISSION STATEMENT
The Ph.D. Program in Learning, Literacies and Technologies (LLT) is designed to prepare scholars who will address socially significant educational challenges and transform P-20 educational programs through rigorous research and educational interventions. Graduates rely on interdisciplinary theoretical and methodological perspectives to engage, influence, and transform educational institutions and their practices.
The program graduates educational researchers who serve as scholars, leaders, and teacher educators engaged in the design, development, and/or use of literacies and technologies that promote learning. Graduates are stewards of their educational field, working across disciplinary boundaries to address the learning challenges of the new millennium.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
ASU's doctoral program in Learning, Literacies, and Technologies, includes a concentration in Sport Pedagogy/Physical Education Teacher Education. The degree program is housed in the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College (MLFTC), and typically has had anywhere from 4-8 doctoral students. The program requires full-time study and includes a Teaching/Research Assistantship, and requires 4 years for completion. The course of study includes a core of Sport Pedagogy courses, coursework on quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, and coursework in a secondary area of interest. Full-time faculty members in the area include Drs. Pamela Kulinna and Hans van der Mars. On-going research projects focus on developing a better understanding of the structure and implementation of comprehensive school physical activity programs.

PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS
Teaching:
Through the program's assistantships, Doctoral-PETE students gain extensive teaching and supervision experience in PETE-specific courses, including: Elementary and Secondary Methods, Teaching of Team Sports, Teaching of Group Exercise Classes, Teaching of Strength Conditioning for Health, Physical Activity Promotion in the High School, Teaching Physical Activity Concepts, Health Literacy for Schools, etc.
In addition, all Doctoral PETE student supervise 5-8 student teachers and 1-2 pre-student teaching practicum PETE students.

Scholarship:
All students are expected to engage in a first-year and second-year research project, prior to starting their dissertation research. In addition they assist faculty with their on-going research projects. Each students is also expected to present at professional state-level, regional and national level conferences. They are encouraged as well to write for publication in either professional and/or research journals in order to gain skills, insight and understanding of the publication process.
Service:
Though not required through formal coursework, Arizona State University's doctoral students are encouraged to get involved in activities such as campus councils, serving as reviewer of Teacher of the Year nominations for Arizona State Association for Health and Physical Education, volunteering at AZ Health and Physical Education’s Annual State Convention, serve on committees for regional and national organizations, etc.

- PPE 535 - Introduction to Sport Education: Introduces a grade 5-12 school physical education curriculum that focuses on providing more complete and more authentic sport experiences.
- PPE 550 - Physical Education for the Elementary School: Scope and values of physical education in elementary schools. Methods, materials, and practices in teaching for primary through upper grades.
- PPE 560 - Teaching Physical Activity Concepts: Teaching physical activity concepts in PE settings. Analyzes and critiques state and national physical education standards.
- PPE 570 - Research on Teacher Education in Physical Education: Discusses current research on teacher education across fields, with an emphasis on physical education pedagogy.
- PPE 576 - Research on Curriculum in Physical Education: Discusses and applies research findings on curricular models for physical education and physical activity in school settings and beyond.
- PPE 585 - Research on Teaching in Physical Education: Contemporary research and theory on teaching across fields, with an emphasis on physical education pedagogy; provides a practical research experience.
- PPE 598 - Analysis of Skill and Game Play Performance: Develop analytic skills for informally and formally assessing student performance, including assessment of fundamental motor skills (e.g., skipping, sliding, striking, throwing, catching etc.); execution of sport techniques (e.g., high jump, free throw, shooting, shot-put, etc.) and tactical dimensions of game play as well as the context within which these are performed.
- PPE 784 - Internship - Teaching / Research: Structured practical experience following a contract or plan, supervised by faculty and practitioners.
- PPE 692 - Research: Independent study in which a student, under the supervision of a faculty member, conducts research that is expected to lead to a specific project such as a thesis or dissertation, report, or publication. Assignments might include data collection, experimental work, data analysis, or preparation of a manuscript.

- DCI 701 - Curriculum Theory and Practice: Curriculum theory and practice as a field of study. Its current orientations and applications, modes of inquiry, and community of scholars and practitioners.
- DCI 702 - Interdisciplinary Research Seminar: Core research course for students in the interdisciplinary PhD in Curriculum and Instruction program.
- EXW 500 - Research Methods: Course on research methods in a specific discipline.
- EXW 538 - Obesity, Exercise and Health: Critically examines scientific and medical evidence concerning obesity, exercise, and health across the life span.
- EXW 640 - Analysis of Variance for Exercise and Wellness: Analyzes variance methods with an emphasis on research measures of human performance.
- EXW 641 - Qualitative Research Methods: Introductory overview of qualitative research methods frequently used in education and health. Emphasizes analysis of research and practical application.
- EXW 643 - Correlation/Regression/Multivariate Statistics: Graduate-level statistics course for PhD/master's students who will be doing research in the area of exercise and wellness.
ADMISSIONS
The doctoral program was restructured with the goal of fostering more inter-disciplinary study: Learning, Literacies and Technologies Ph.D. program. Applications for the Learning, Literacies and Technology Ph.D. program are open each year until December 1 for the following Fall Semester admission.

Application Requirements:
- Official Transcripts form previous completed degree programs.
- Candidate Statement writing sample indicating qualifications and aspirations relative to entering Physical Education Teacher Education and doing research in Sport Pedagogy.
- An up-to-date Curriculum Vitae.
- Three letters of recommendation from persons who can speak directly to academic qualifications to enter doctoral degree work.
- International applicants for whom English is not their native language are required to pass the Internet-based TOEFL Test with a minimum score of 80.
- Applicants are strongly encouraged to visit the program to determine fit. Part of the visit will include an interview with the Physical Education and current doctoral students. International applicants are expected to schedule an interview using either Skype or Face-time.

Preferred/Minimum Requirements:
- A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four year institution with a "B" average in the last 90 hours.
- A Master's Degree with a 3.0 GPA in a related field is preferred.
**These are preferred requirements but exceptions can be made on an individual basis**
FINANCIAL AIDE AND EMPLOYMENT
All doctoral students are fully funded for four years in the LLT Doctoral Program at ASU (RA/TA). They include tuition waivers and an annual stipend (approx. $20,000.00). Examples of assistantship responsibilities are RA positions and teaching/supervision experiences starting in year three.
