MISSION STATEMENT
We create and disseminate new knowledge related to physical activity, sports, and physical education. We prepare scholars and researchers, physical education teachers, and sport specialists to deliver education and sport for all segments of society. 

The Department of Kinesiology is a member of the American Kinesiology Association.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
If you aspire to become a sport pedagogy researcher or a physical education teacher/coach educator, then consider our PhD program with a specialization in sport pedagogy. Our degree program emphasizes the acquisition of theoretical knowledge and experiences in planning, funding, conducting, and publishing sport pedagogy research. Along with required coursework, you will also take part in supervised practical experiences pertinent to your future role as a teacher, coach, or university professor.

PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS
Teaching:
  • 2000-level Early Childhood Methods Courses for Elementary Education Majors
  • Supervision of Student Teachers and Practicum Students
  • Basic PE Program

CORE COURSES
Incorporating real-world issues and blending face-to-face instruction with practical experience, our sport pedagogy specialization focuses on the study and practice of teaching and coaching physical education, sport, and physical activity. Our doctoral preparation demands the highest level of scholarship and study in physical education with rigorous coursework, independent study, supervised practical experiences, and a dissertation.

The PhD in Kinesiology typically requires a minimum of 30 semester hours of coursework. Your total number of hours will vary depending on the number of hours needed to achieve necessary proficiency in research, sufficient breadth and soundness of scholarship, and a thorough acquaintance with a specific field of knowledge as determined by your major professor and advisory committee.

As a student in the sport pedagogy specialization, you will take coursework in:
  • Instructional strategies
  • Curriculum theory and design
  • Issues and trends in sport pedagogical research
  •  Analysis of teaching
  • Coaching education​

​We also offer ample opportunities for field work and research experience as well as a variety of supporting courses, cognate courses, and research tools courses that cover a many sport and physical education topics and areas, along with research methodologies.​

ADMISSIONS
​Preferred/Minimum Requirements:
  • GPA (Master's Degree >3.0)
  • GRE (we take the best combination of Verbal and Quantitative)
  • Three Letters of Recommendation
  • Personal Statement

FINANCIAL AIDE AND EMPLOYMENT
Students may qualify for a variety of assistantships, scholarships, and other financial awards to help offset the cost of tuition, housing, and other expenses. Links to additional information:

Assistantships:
We provide assistantship opportunities to qualified students, offering financial support and experience in a professional, teaching, or research role. Assistants work 13 to 20 hours a week and receive a stipend, full tuition waiver, and one-third remission of our university health insurance.
