MISSION STATEMENT
To prepare professional educators to effectively teach at all school levels- Kindergarten through post-secondary. At the doctoral level we strive to:
- Expand the breadth and depth of students’ knowledge of pedagogy.
- Hone students’ inquiry skills as consumers, producers, and disseminators of research.
- Provide students with teaching and field work experiences that prepare them to competently assume positions in the preparation of physical education teachers.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The PhD in Physical Education, Sports and Exercise Science with a concentration in Curriculum & Instruction prepares individuals for college teaching and research in professional preparation programs dealing with curriculum development, teaching, school environments and supervision of teachers and programs in physical education. Prospective students are those with teaching experience in physical education who desire to work within the aforementioned areas in an educator preparation program. Upon completion of the program, individuals should be equipped to become the next generation of leaders in physical education teacher education who take seriously the preparation of effective teaching candidates, conduct scholarly activities and inform the professional community through written and/or oral presentations, and serve the discipline as a steward.
The doctoral program is housed in the College of Education’s department of Health, Exercise and Sports Sciences. The minimum degree requirements include a minimum of 72 hours beyond the B. S. degree; completion of required courses in the content area as well as courses in statistics, research design, and 12 hours in an approved supporting area; and completion of the dissertation.

Unique Aspects of our Program:
- Our large The University of New Mexico is a minority-majority institution with over 35% of students identifying as Hispanic. As an Hispanic-Serving Institution, UNM represents a cross-section of cultures and backgrounds.
- Doctoral students are able to develop close relationships with faculty in the program because of an ‘open door’ policy most faculty have with doctoral students. Faculty believe they have a responsibility to mentor the next generation of stewards of the discipline, so they interact on a regular basis, both in formal and informal professional settings, with doctoral students.
PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS
